Hot Toys MMS200 Man of Steel review by Khai @ Kool Kollectibles

Hey all, it's Khai from Kool Kollectibles back for another review, this time for the Hot Toys MMS200 Man of Steel 1/6th scale figure.

When the reboot of Superman was announced, and pictures shown of the star Henry Cavill in the new suit, fans around the world were divided into those that craved for the past, and those that loved the vision of the future. For me before I saw the movie, I was certainly the former, where I disliked the suit and thought he didn't match the look of Superman at all.

But after seeing the movie, I was totally converted! I loved the movie, save for the last 15 minutes of the Superman/Zod climactic battle, which I thought was overblown and unnecessary. But pretty much everything up to that point had me hooked and sold - the history told in flashbacks, the new sharp and sassy Lois Lane, the relationship with his earth parents, Zod and his horde of Kryptonian rejects - I loved all of it! And I really felt that Henry Cavill made the role his, and was the perfect start to a new era of Superman.

My excitement was a little dimmed when Hot Toys first showed their prototype pictures of the Man of Steel figure. It was clear that something was wrong with the body, which looked very bloated and too "rotund" for Superman, especially compared to the buff form of Cavill in that suit. But as always, Hot Toys tweaked and fixed certains things from the prototype to the final released product, and for the most part, the new figure is pretty amazing! There are some quibbles though, which I'll go into below - so read on if you're interested in how this 200th MMS release from Hot Toys turned out.

BOX ART:
I was actually a little disappointed with the box art and packaging. The previous Christopher Reeve Superman figure came packaged in a gorgeous art box shaped like the S-symbol which remains one of their all time best box designs. Some other MMS releases feature a shoe box design with a large art/photo cardboard insert.

Unfortunately, the Man of Steel figure comes in a simple fold out design which you then have to open up to access the figure. It's simple enough, but just doesn't convey the class/style that I was hoping for in this major release.

Kotobukiya ArtFX+ New 52 Justice League Superman statue

Hi all, Khai from Kool Kollectibles here again, this time with a series of reviews on the Kotobukiya ArtFX+ New 52 Justice League statues - first up Superman! :)

The Kotobukiya ArtFX+ New 52 Justice League Superman statue I think captures a great mix of the classic, iconic look with the modern touches in fashion now. There was a lot of controversy over the New 52 costumes, but I think they look great. Of course it helps that the Kotobukiya statues have amazing paint apps that really make the costumes shine and stand out on display.

The head sculpt is quite good, with a more serious visage that I prefer to any of Superman smiling. The hair is sculpted nicely, and the facial paint app is quite good. Eyes are always difficult areas with lots of paint slop around the eyes and face, but Kotobukiya have done a nice job here.

The pose they've selected for the statue depicts strength and an inner purpose without being too over the top or dynamic. Pretty much perfect as the point figure in a Justice League group display.

The lines and patterns on the suit and boots accurately capture the New 52 look, and are done very precisely with no colour bleeding. The muscular sculpting is also done nicely, without the overlay buff look that can sometimes affect other anime characters. The iconic "S" on his chest is done very nicely, with a nice gold colour used too.

The statue looks great from pretty much all angles. If anything, the only thing that I could fault would be perhaps the overall body proportions in the legs. I actually find the legs are a little short, particularly when compared with the other males in the Justice League team here. It may be because the red belt is placed a little low on his hips causing an illusion of shorter legs, but I think it would've been slightly better raising the belt or making the legs a little longer or making the torso slightly shorter.

Still, even from behind the statue looks amazing. I really love the way they made the cape look, with a natural drape coming to a point in the middle. The symbol is painted on well and looks nice against the red.

The magnets in the feet work really well with the magnetic base to add some flexibility in placing the statue on the base. This works particularly well when posing the entire team together, where you can move the statues closer together or change their orientation slightly while still using all the bases lined up together.

With this statue, either up close or from a normal viewing distance, you'll be extremely happy with the quality. The metallic blue is a perfect hue, and you really could spend a lot of time just staring at it :) If some company was able to make an actual articulated figure with a similar paint app and a wide range of articulation joints that weren't too obvious, that would be amazing. But until then, I think this statue is a great representation of the New 52 Superman and will be a welcome addition to any collection!

Highly recommended! Check out the Kool Kollectibles youtube channel video review too below :)

LEGO 76002-1: Superman Metropolis Showdown

Source

The USA Today has revealed details of toys being made to tie-in with the new Superman movie 'Man Of Steel', which is out in June. Among them is LEGO set 76002, Superman Metropolis Showdown. It looks as if it comes with Superman and I think Black Adam. I like the minifigs but the set looks a little boring. I'm expecting this set to be $39 here in Australia. Man Of Steel - Jor El Hot Toy?

Source

Some small spoilers in this article!!!! Stop reading if you don't want to know!

As many of you are a where, The new Superman movie The Man Of Steel is soon to hit theatres. In the new movie Russell Crowe plays Supermans dad, Jor El. Since we have seen the Hot Toys teaser pictures it has hotly been debated whether the purple/red cape was in fact Jor El's or the man of steel's. By the looks of things and the posts of all the guys who would know, it has been decided that it is Jor El. So this brings me to my question. Who would actually buy this? I love Hot Toys myself but not sure I would have him. Go to our FACEBOOK page and tell us.

What I do like is the fact that Hot Toys are looking at lesser characters to make. This is good personally as I feel it really rounds out a collection. A great example of this is the Avenger Hot Toys and the ability to get an Agent Coulson and the teased Bruce Banner. Bring on Alfred! Joking! Anyway stay tuned for some more Hot Toys love coming up as they soom to be revealing more each day. Also we will get back into the cool collectible and Toy stuff very soon.

DC Injustice Gods among us very soon!

Source

Whilst there is no official announcement from Mattel, BigBadToyStore has put up pre-orders for the 3rd series of the DC Unlimited line.

No big surprises here – we’re going to be getting more of the New 52 designs with Aquaman and Darkseid (which we have been lucky enough to know about for some time) but the interesting news is the rumors of two figures from Injustice: Gods Among Us the video game in the form of Superman and the Joker.

The other figure we have heard about from Injustice is Batman from the Batman Unlimited line. To me this is some what strange to mix two different series into the one line. I wasn't big on the Arkham Asylum/city figures produced by Mattel and preferred the DC Collectibles versions a lot better.

In saying this I will be interested in seeing how these turn out as the New 52 figures were really good. Only time will tell but fingers crossed Mattel can produce the goods as Injustice will be an awesome game and should have the figures at the highest quality to follow.
